Running is meant to feel free, and whether you love to push yourself for speed and time, see new sights on hiking trails, or just like taking it slow with an early morning walk, we all move to the same tune. But when safety becomes a serious concern, everyone loses a little bit of that free feeling. If you want to help retain that feeling, here are some safety tips for runners, hikers, walkers, and everything in between to help you move with confidence, comfort, and, most importantly, freedom.
Aim for Daylight
Daylight ensures high visibility and more people on your run.
Don’t Run Alone
If at all possible, run with a partner or in a group for added safety.
Tell Others Where You Are
When it is not possible to run with others, tell someone where you will be and consider sharing your location in case of emergencies.
Run Against Traffic
Always run against traffic when on a roadside to ensure you see oncoming cars.
Wear High Visibility Clothes
When running in darker conditions wear clothes with high visibility, bright or light colors work but high visibility clothes are best. Avoid wearing dark shades like black or grey.
Pick a Safe Route
Know your route beforehand to ensure your safety no matter where you are on your run. Avoid isolated or dark areas, especially at night.
Stay Aware
Picking a safe route is critical, but it is equally important to stay mindful and aware on that route. Use open headphones when listening to music to ensure you maintain spatial and auditory awareness.
Carry Protection
Pepper spray, GPS, alarm, whistle, and striking tools are just a few examples of important defense items for anyone looking to protect themselves while on the move.
Never Forget Your Phone
Always have your phone with you in case of emergencies.
